Get a World-Class Business Self-Education

Hello, I'm new to this community. Do any of you have experience in starting up a new consulting practice? I have been a successful psychiatrist for 20+ years (clearlifepath.org) and now intend to market my expertise to other psychiatrists who might need help doing what I have done. Plus I have enjoyed teaching psychiatrists in training much of my career but never have focused specifically on the business aspects of that business. Any feedback/discussion would be much appreciated.

Hello William,
Welcome to the PMBA Community!

I read you profile and with reference to this post, may I suggest -

A. Have you checked theses books?:
Getting Started in Consulting by Alan Weiss
Getting Everything You Can Out of All You've Got by Jay Abraham
The Knack by Norm Brodsky & Bo Burlingham

While you seek further inputs on starting your consultancy business, I guess these books should give you a good start in thinking things through.

B. I shared this some time back with a member. From a different perspective, see if this interests you.

“As you are building your business, start creating a buzz about your new venture by sharing your expertise. You can start a blog towards this on the PMBA Community and then share this link at every opportunity. You don’t have to write lengthy stuff every day. Just a crisp but insightful paragraph about the problems faced by fellow psychiatrists and the solutions to those…posted every week, would be very effective. So when, you are there to start offering your consultancy, you are already known in the market for this new business you are in (you are already an accomplished psychiatrist).”
Just a thought!

Good to have you here. Please keep us posted on how your venture gets built.
Your posts are welcome and highly appreciated.
I look forward to your increased participation!
Welcome again to the PMBA Community!

Shantanu, Thanks so much for your response. I checked out the Weiss' Getting Started book from the downtown library just yesterday afternoon. A blog about the business end! I have a blog about a more esoteric side of my practice experience but your suggestion makes perfect sense.I could even write a paragraph or two about the "moving pieces" of the consultancy practice as I think them through - brilliant. Thanks

Also, this mitigates against the sense that I am the only person on this planet that has these kinds of thoughts. Thanks for that too. Bill
