Recently, I started a blog about management (http://blog.venturecooker.com). One of the ideas I have been looking at is a series. This series would be like a mini MBA with topics that include:
What is Business? / Business Structures
Ethics
Marketing Basics
Target Marketing
Micro/Macroeconomics
Accounting Basics
Budgets/Financial Modeling
Financing
Sales
Business Development
Negotiating
Running R&D
Patents & Trademarks
Launching A Product
Operations
Managing People
Starting a Business From Scratch
I was wondering if I missed any topic that might be of interest. Also, would this be something you would read? The plan would be to do a topic a day or something like that.
This is worthwhile side project Jarie!
You may also like to have this.
They have a community on ning as well. And they have specifically made covered
the PMBA recommended books.
One of the thing that I always wish to read and see how executives
see themselves applying these concepts in practice.
You may like to add something like "Share your DIRECT (only) experience with this concept"
after every concept you write for each of the above topics.
Thanks for the pointer. That's a good idea about the experience topic. The other idea was to have exercises to reinforce the concept as well as a Celebration Of Knowledge (which is marketing for Quiz).
As for logistics, should this be put in the side projects category or somewhere else? I do plan on doing this on my blog and then posting the links here.
I understand that you will face time constraints as you start this project
as well as maintain your personal blog. Hence, having the main content
on your blog and then providing the link here should work well for you.
Once you start, announce your side project with a catchy title.
Refresh the title of this side project as and when you post a new link here,
so that your post remain visible on the front page.
My question is - how will you make money out of it?
Would I read it? No. I'm reading the PMBA books instead.
What's your objective? What's your agenda? Who is your intended audience?
It seems to me that if your intended audience is people who want to start a business, then maybe you should study all those areas yourself and offer your services as a consultant to them.
Sheldon-
Thanks for your feedback.
At this point, it's not about making money. It's about practicing writing for a book and giving my SCORE clients (and PMBA colleagues) the foundations of business.
The objective is to have people develop the habit of working on their management skills every day. No agenda other than to practice and get feedback on my book. The intended audience is people who want to learn management a day at a time, in manageable chunks. That way, it does not seem so overwhelming.
I have studied these topics in detail because I live them running my own business and being a counselor at SCORE (www.sfscore.org). Volunteering with SCORE has taught me that most clients I help lack the basics and would benefit from overviews of these topics. As an example, checkout my post on the three essential pieces you need to start a business: http://blog.venturecooker.com/2009/06/11/three-not-so-easy-pieces/
I think this is a really good idea. I think if you had a segment on International business or how some of these other topics work on a global scale would be interesting. I look forward to reading about your insights!
Thanks, John
Because I am in a start-up environment, i can definitely relate to the topics that you've mentioned above.
What aspects of marketing are you planning to talk about? It would be great if you can touch on social media in greater detail. Alot of companies, big and small, are looking to tap into the large consumer base that spend so much time online. If you're able to give excellent advice on how to utilize social media to attract and keep an audience for different industries, I believe you'll be able to get people interested.
Melissa-
Glad to hear. The list came from my experience doing a couple of startups and a lot of questions from my SCORE clients.
In terms of marketing topics, I was going to start with the basics (like What is Marketing?), build into developing your Target Market and then discuss marketing strategies. I will make sure I add social media to the marketing strategies sections.
I am more into "Marketing Basics" however, I am worried too much about our essay project about Marketing. I only have few hours and I think it's not enough to finish the entire subject. :-( too bad... Anyways, my friend advised to buy essays online.... and I'm about to negotiate them about my topic. :-)
